You can start it from the month of your choice and from that point on you have to go within a year of the date you set it to.
It wont take long to come through I got mine within 3 hours of sending it off.

Is this new? What do you base this information on? As long as I've known, it's been that you have a year from the date on which the WHV was granted to enter the country (and then of course its year of validity starts when you enter the country).
(The way you phrase it, you could apply more than 1 year before you intend to enter; the way I know it, you can only apply up to 1 year before you intend to enter.)
The official website of the Australian Department of Immigration for still says ("Visa holders" tab, "How long your visa lasts"):
With this visa, you can: enter Australia within 12 months from the date your visa is granted (this cannot be extended or deferred)

yes I received mine back a few days ago and on the email it stated you have 12 months to go from the date it's granted.
