Only rent from a reputable, well known international agency.
Buy all the extra insurance options.
We've had several nightmares with hire cars turning out to be uninsured, hire companies trying to charge for mechanical problems, even trying to charge to replace a worn out flat tyre!
Moroccan roads are statistically the 6th most dangerous in the world. Most accidents involve pedestrians, bicycles, taxis and buses - so keep clear of all of them!
Respect the speed limits. Fines are substantial, payment is on the spot in cash.
Make sure you understand the arcane 'priorité à droite' rule of the road which is still erratically in force, most noticeably on some - but not all - roundabouts.
My advice is to take any and all insurance offered and then possibly additional. I also advise you to rent form an international company such as Eurocar. The rates are better and so are the cars. The majority of Moroccan rental cars are jalopies that could break down on you. You take on a lot of risk if you use a Moroccan car rental company.

(1) Indeed we are planning to rent from an international company, but as we were about to rent with EUROPCAR (which has the lowest prices), we read some bad reviews about them too (cars breaking down etc, no quick replacement or again car breaking down etc). Have you had any experience with them?? Avis and Hertz (and Budget) give higher prices (different place drop-off).
(2) Also, we were thinking to get this Super Damage Collision Excess Waiver either directly from the company or through another private insurance company. Could you give some advice on this? Shall we get it? Directly from the company or from a third part, like insurance4carhire.com?
I am quite considered about staying safe while driving and not being over-charged either... So, your input to this qill be highly appreciated and taken into account!

All the companies you mention will be streets ahead of the local competition. Personally I'd buy their car insurance, but you should, of course, have your own travel insurance too.
Cars do break down, particularly the very small ones that seem to get driven down rough tracks at speed 'because it's a hire car'.
Morocco is a surprisingly big country, roads are slow, and I believe many of the hire companies are only franchises, which means that they haven't really got access to the resources of the huge corporations who's names they use - so one way hire is often more complex.
Don't expect too much, in other words.
Check that your destination in the desert is accessible on a surfaced road. Be wary about typical comments about 'a kilometre of piste'. Note that, despite what the map and your GPS says, there is NO paved road between Erfoud and Merzouga (the road from Rissani does exist).
Rent something suitable if you are going to have to use the tracks.
If you rent a 4x4, remember that the laws of physics still apply and that sand is the most difficult surface to drive on (yes, snow is easier than sand).
If it's all too complex, and you need a 4x4, or if you might enjoy the huge benefits having an off road vehicle brings in the Sahara, consider hiring a 'transport touristique' 4x4.
By the time you add fuel, tolls, parking fees and police fines to the equation you'll find it's probably cheaper.
