Indonesia

Hey guys, I'm planning on going travelling around Asia for approximately 5-6 weeks - I know probably not long enough to cover everything but it's all I can afford.

Check out seat61.com for the route from Jakarta to Bali.

The major gateways to Southeast Asia are Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. You can get visas on arrival in Cambodia and Indonesia. It's more complicated with Vietnam, so I suggest you leave that country for another time. Buy an "open jaw" ticket to one of the gateway cities, then return home from Denpasar (Bali). The latter is a major tourist destination; and there are lots of flights. No need to retrace your steps. There also are lots of cheap flights from Bangkok, KL and Singapore to destinations throughout Asia and beyond.

Since you're in the UK, use Skyscanner to research flights. One possible itinerary would be to fly from the UK to Bangkok, spend a few days there, then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to see the Angkor temples. Note that Bangkok has two airports. The discount airlines, such as AirAsia, fly from Don Mueang airport. From Siem Reap there are flights to various Indonesian cities, including Medan, Sumatra. Near Medan is Bukit Lawang, where you can see orangutan. Then make your way to Java and Bali.

It helps if you look at a map; research what you want to see and do; and set priorities. There is a lot of information online, including this Web site, which has an excellent travel planner.

This spring I'll be visiting Indonesia again after a trip to Timor-Leste (East Timor).
