Pacific Coast-USA

I am planning a Pacific West Coast road trip, ideally early summer 2016. My dream scenario has me starting in Seattle, Washington, and ending in Hermosa beach, CA, where my cousins live. I am curious how long this trip would take, when allowing all the major, definitely some minor attractions along the way. Ideally, I would like to stay along the coast. Has any one done this trip, or some adaptations of it? What are the must sees? I am looking to stay in hostels and campgrounds.

Highway 101 is one of the most famous drives in the world so it's super easy to reseach. There's a zillion websites detailing all the stops and detours that are available along this route.

You're going to have a gas. Drive safely.

Cheers,
Terry

Wow! This is a great travel. Take me with you!

Aniway, i don't know very well the zone road from Seattle to San Francisco but i suggest to spend many days in the Big Sur. I think that's one of the best place on Earth. The athmosphere is amazing and the landscape unique.

I think you can doing the entire travel in a couple of week, maby 10 days if you haven't all this time.

Bon voyage!

A great trip which could last 1 1/2 to 2 weeks depending on how much time you spend at different locations. Traveling on highway 101 is the best (slower than the freeway, but more scenic). Check out the Redwood National Park (you should be going right through that area). Big Sur is a must see. There are so many things to see along the way. Enjoy your trip.

The coast of Oregon is fantastic. use gmaps and you tube to help plan.

is the state-run travel site, and will show you the campsite list.

I would guess about 2 weeks if you really want to see it all. San Francisco is a must stop, but be sure to pre-book any hostel in that city. If you just want to drive through and only see highlights, it could be done in a week.

If you rent a car, remember that you will be paying a hefty drop charge for a one-way rental!

Thank you all great recommendations! I thought it would take much longer!

Also, have any of you tried couch surfing? pros/ cons?

Couch Surfing is a hugely popular and well respected website that has been used by countless travellers all over the world.

Cheers,
Terry

Your trip could be done in two days if you were in a hurry, so I agree with other estimates of 10 days-ish. I've couchsurfed the central california coast a few years ago. I had a really hard time getting responses (which is not true for other places in the U.S. and other countries). However, I did finally find someone to connect with and had an absolute blast!

Hope that helps!

We didn't travel quite as far south as you're planning but this past summer, my wife and I took the following trip:

Seattle > Mt. Rainier National Park
Mt. Rainier National Park > Portland OR
Portland, OR > Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park > Redwood Nat'l Park
Redwood Nat'l Park > Napa Valley CA
Napa Valley, CA > San Francisco

This trip took about 12 days but we felt a little rushed at times. Would have liked more time to explore Seattle and Portland. And we were only in SF for an afternoon before flying home. I think 3 weeks or so for your trip would be sufficient. If you're outdoorsy, any of the parks we visited are phenomenal. But you could easily substitute Olympic National Park for Rainier if you wanted. Driving the coast along the 101 is an experience in itself. Safe travels, should be an amazing trip!
