Question about Countries

Hi...

Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey are all Crown Dependencies. Transnistria, honestly, who cares. Palestine, wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. And as for Northern Ireland, not even the Irish know. ;-)

Cheers,
Terry

Terry!

Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey are part of the UN+ list. Transnistria cares me and it's on the UN+ list too, the same as with Northern Ireland. Palestine is not at UN+ list but at travellerspoint.

This is your personal "unqualified?" opinion but honestly not the answer to my question :-)

Cheers,
Kate

Tranquilo Kate, my answer was (mostly) tongue-in-cheek. Sorry if it came across as serious.

And there is no qualified answer to your question.

Cheers,
Terry

There are apparently 195 independent sovereign states in the world (UN member states) plus the Vatican and Palestine (UN observer states). The amongst the others you list are either dependent territories (Northern Ireland, Scotland as part of the United Kingdom, Guernsey as a Crown Dependency) or UN specialised agencies (Niue, Kosovo) or not members of the UN and claimed by other countries (Transnistria, Somaliland).

That wonderful and "never wrong" font of all knowledge, Wikipedia has quite a good .

That list of independent states on Wikipedia is pretty much my go-to reference. We'll never have something that everyone is happy with, but I think this list is reasonable enough.

Guernsey, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Jersey are all on our list of countries. Depending on where on the site it's being done though, sometimes these end up just as the UK and sometimes they are individually available for selection (ie, when editing your profile). Northern Ireland should really show up everywhere where England does.

Transnistria is only recognised by four other unrecognised states. Not really enough for us to add it. I'm not sure what UN+ list you're referring to that includes it.

I've been looking at going to Transnistria and it appears to be fully de facto independent for the purposes of a traveller. Maybe that "for the traveller" is more relevant to this site than the number of other countries recognising it politically?

I like those 'discussions', although like said before, it all depends on how you want to see the lists outside of the formal sovereign states/UN members.

These lists are also a nice contribution on Wikipedia:

Especially the latter one is pretty long, with territories like Svalbard, French Polynesia, Greenland all included and most of them also on the list here on TP.

That's why at you can see there are 247 countries represented

I tried to include them all in the travelguide as well, although some of them have no significant use for most travellers, as they are hard or almost impossible to visit without time and money to burn. .

If you want to have a laugh about idiots, who see "collecting the world" as a hobby, check these websites:

...

Especially the latter one is hilarious regarding their view of all territories etc that there are in the world.

Have fun!

Actually yes, we include a bunch of those dependent territories as well. That decision was made very early in the history of TP. If someone travels to French Polynesia, we were pretty certain they wouldn't want to be entering France as their destination
