(Do note that STA has a habit of trying to upsell you on all kinds of tours and starter packages which you can do perfectly well without, and/or do much cheaper on your own, so be careful with that.)
The visa application process is extremely straightforward. Just apply directly , fill in the form, and you'll receive confirmation of the WHV having been granted within a few hours (a week at most, but for most people it's minutes to hours).
One of the requirements of the WHV is that you have sufficient funds to be able to support yourself, which they define as AUD $5000. Most average backpackers, living frugally and sticking to a budget, use up that much money in about two months (others easily run through it within 2-3 weeks), which is indicative that you really need at least that much, just because finding work and waiting for your first paycheck to come in doesn't tend to go much faster. However, at no point is anyone ever asked to actually prove that they have that much money (as far as anyone's ever reported about it here), so don't worry too much about it at this point. (However, when you go, I'd strongly recommend to really have that much money available, and double the amount would be even better.)
Adelaide's a pretty decent city. Not much exciting going on, but a good laid back vibe, decent facilities, and there's a very nice botanic garden, plus lovely understated Japanese garden.
