Car Insurance

I'm from NZ and planning a trip around Europe but I'm not sure how long it'll last. I have a UK passport so I can work there so I could be skipping country to country for a few years.

Hi.
I am from Poland and my car insurance is valid in all EU countries and I think this is how it works. So the price would depend on the country where you buy and register your car, but your insurance should be valid in the rest of EU countries. It may provide the minimum cover and you can extend it if you want, for example pay extra for assistance etc. Outside EU you would need to pay for an additional "green card" but if you are agoing to travel within EU it will be not necessary.
Also, remember that in UK and Ireland there is left-hand traffic and in the rest of countries right-hand. So if you are going to travel mostly in continental part of EU it is better to buy a car outside UK or Ireland because right hand-traffic is more popular here.

i'm from italy, i agree with dxdwro; it's the same with the italian insurance. I also suggest to stay in touch with your actual car insurance provider because you could need a paper that will demonstrate your record, in order to pay a lower insurance premium (if ask for an insurance being like a "brand new driver" you could pay much more).
Good luck

Yes, daniele19 you're right. It is probably good to take from NZ that paper with your record and your discounts that you have in NZ because for example in Poland when you posess driving licence 10 years and has had no accidents you can pay even 60 or 70% less. The same would be probably in the rest of EU countries. BTW- I was in Italy in Tuscany last year but hired car for a week at the airport and I can recommend visiting Tuscany. I love Siena and Bologna And Italians- so nice people!
