Just arrived in Sydney, staying at Base and need friends!

So, I've arrived in Sydney, I'm jet lagged and feeling petrified!
I went through STA Travel and booked a package which I thought was a group thing. Turns out I have to book each activity myself.

The first few days in a new destination, especially as an inexperienced solo traveller, can be quite harsh. My main advice: Don't expect too much of yourself! It's only natural that you'll need some time to get your bearings and sleep off the jetlag. Go spend lots of time outside in the sunshine (oh bother, I see tomorrow is a rainy day... But at least for the day after tomorrow, and at least go walk outside as much as possible tomorrow, finding some nice cafe with big windows to sit behind and drink a cup of something warm), and don't set yourself too many goals other than just getting a feel for the city. You'll presumably be there for quite a while still, so you can afford to take things slow and at your own pace.

Do you have any specific interests to help you feel good? Chances are that Sydney caters to it! For example, I love science fiction books, and Sydney has this huge bookstore on York Street specializing in nothing but science fiction books, where I can happily spend a very long time browsing the shelves. It's worth searching (and/or asking here) for something similar which might match your tastes.

If I remember the location of the Base correctly, you should be quite close to Darling Harbour. What I love to do in that area of Sydney is to just make my way over to the Chinese Garden of Friendship, and spend 2-3 hours very slowly walking its many winding pathways, sitting on its benches and just soaking up the surroundings. As with all good Chinese and Japanese gardens, there's a different carefully orchestrated view around every bend. If you're interested in doing some photography, that's absolute paradise, but even if you aren't, it's a very worthwhile destination.

Or alternatively, mosey over to the east, to Hyde Park, walk its length north, and then head via the Art Gallery to the Royal Botanic Gardens. See if you can find the flying foxes hanging from their trees in the middle of the park, and then make your way to the waterfront, strolling west along it until you reach the Opera House. There's so much to see and soak up that you shouldn't feel too lonely, and there'll be smiling happy people all around you.

If you keep feeling alone at Base, you might also consider moving to a different, much smaller hostel. The big chain ones like Base have excellent facilities, but you do get to feel very anonymous amongst the hundreds of other backpackers, and that's much better at smaller hostels where you'll start recognizing the other guests much more swiftly, simply because there's far fewer of them.
