TRAVELS WITH BIRDS

With my husband Gord, I have travelled around North America looking for birds. Why do we travel with birds?
Birds will take you to beautiful natural places. to high mountains, desert, tundra, to lakes, rivers and seas, to forests, swamps and alpine meadows. You will see not only birds but bears, wolves, lynx, bobcats, bison. elk, mountain goats and dolphins and whales. You meet people who share your love for the outdoors and point you to more special places.
Our trails may lead to historic sites, to forts and battlefields, to parks and national monuments but the birds we find there often define the place for us.
We are both photographers and have captured images of brilliant spring warblers at Point Pelee, Ontario, limpkin in the Florida Everglades,, grizzly bears in British Columbia, thick-billed murres in Nunavut.
Right now we are travelling close to home watching the meadowlarks and kildeer and northern harriers - and soon the warblers - come back to Peterborough, Ontario.

I'm not a bird watcher Enid, but I must say I've met a few in my travels and they have all been crazy/unique/fun/nutty people in the most interesting manner. I love anyone who is utterly passionate about anything - the subject is immaterial, all that matters is the passion.

If you ever get to Cuba I will show you the zunzuncito (Mellisuga helenae) or the "bee hummingbird." As I'm sure you know it's the smallest bird in the world, you can easily mistake it for a big honey bee.

I have lots of them swarming the feeders on my balcony. You're welcome by anytime to see this incredibly unique and interesting bird.

Cheers,
Terry from Havana

Hi Terry:

Thanks for writing to me about Cuba. I have been to Cuba once and know it is a very special place.
We have even seen the bee humming bird. We were on a Quest Nature Tour and our guide took us on a trail to very tall mahogany trees where the bee hummingbirds were in the very top. Imagine having them come to feeders on your balcony. How lucky you are.
I remember Cuba as a place of unspoiled natural beauty. We saw wonderful colourful birds, rare and exotic to us. I hope this aspect of Cuba won't be lost as new tourists throng to the island.
Enjoy your hummingbirds. I think you are already a birdwatcher!

Enid
