If you book well in advance with good airlines you are almost guarenteed your seat. Although all airlines are different. I would reccomend deciding which airline you want to fly with and getting reviews from other travellers. This will enable you to see other peoples experiences and see what times of the year flights are most likely to be cancelled.

Don't worry about every little thing you read on the net - always someone complaining about something. Air Asia is about as good as it gets for inexpensive point-to-point air travel, and besides, what other carrier gives these deals and good fares. Read the contract before you click OK to make sure it's refundable. Last year I had a Thai carrier cancel on me (PB Air) and wanted to take a long time to refund my credit, so I just put in a claim with my cr card bank and I had the refund in days (they even gave me a little extra). You worry too much - enjoy Asia.
I don't think it's a good idea to book too far in advance - I would think the limit would be 4 months for myself. You have to remember that airlines have to be able to change schedules or cancel routes altogether to stay profitable. Air Asia is a very well run company and it's still growing.

Airlines cancel their flights for various reasons… technical, due to bad weather conditions, strikes and lock outs at destination points..etc. If you are one of the victims, then it is nothing but bad luck. Normally a good budget airlines don’t cancel their flight on any flimsy grounds and that to too often as their image gets spoiled before the public.
Though used Air Asia and Tiger airways many times, no flights of mine were cancelled. Of course there were delays but it was ok for the reasons they had given.
Though not an advertiser of AirAsia, I think AirAsia seems to be a good airlines based on my experience.
In my opinion, if you book about 30-45days in advance, you should be able to get a cheapest ticket.
I've flown AirAsia over ten times and only had one flight cancelled. They basically sent me an e-mail the night before I was due to fly so I didn't actually read the e-mail until after I was due to fly. As it turned out though, I'd already decided not to bother using the flight cos I'd decided to go somewhere else in the meantime and the flight ticket was so cheap that I basically decided that losing less than £20 wasn't a big deal.
I don't know what would happened with regards to a refund/replacement cos like I say I'd already decided not to bother with the flight by the time it got cancelled. I'm pretty sure they'd be legally required to put you on another flight though, or give you a refund.
Overall I really like AirAsia. For what you pay and how cheap they are you can't really complain.

I've travelled with AirAsia several times. It's been alright.
I just came back from a trip to Jogjakarta. I bought the ticket last year in October... hahahahaha...
There've been no issue with buying advanced tickets from AirAsia by any of my friends too...
So, it's safe to buy advanced tickets from AirAsia.
