Unfortunate it is hard to find timetable for buses in 3rd world country. There are buses available and I think they run a few times a day and the journey takes around 6 hours if I'm not mistaken
Yes, it is hard to find any reliable source of information. Any guidance is welcome.
Anyway, I am going there. Once I find out, I'll definitely write about these things.
Try to go to Lee Garden. Beside the Shopping Complex, there are many travel agents on Prachathipat Road. If not bus, they might have vans to Alor Setar. I am not sure about the schedule and fare. They might be reliable...
Well, I am back from Thailand and Malaysia and want to share my experience on the topic.
While in Hat Yai, I enquired from several travel agents. None of them said there is a direct bus to Alor Setar though there are several buses going to Butterworth, Penang and Kula Lumpur in Malaysia.
Still if you or somebody insists on going by bus, they get you in one of these buses, charge you the same fare and drop you on the highway near toll plaza of Alor Setar outside the city limits. (Alor Setar is on the way to Peneng & Butterworth).
Then you have to manage yourself how to go Alor Setar town.
Best option is to take train from Hat Yai. Takes 4 hours including around 45 minutes to 1 hour at the border.
