What to do in US for 6 Weeks!!

Hi all,

Im flying into NY at the end of may and making my way through the south coast to LA in 6 weeks, i'd look at using Amtrak if i had to choose between that and the greyhound bus, its not so bad in oz etc...just not very pleasant in america apparently

Is greyhound that bad? I had heard that the bus stations were pretty depressing.

How much is an Amtrak ticket, say for a month/6 weeks? Or are individuals better?

So you're doing it all in 6 weeks aswell? Where are you planning on stopping off? I was thinking of doing San Fran, LA, , Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, San Diego in the west coast. But not sure where to go after that and if it is possible to see much more of America in 6 weeks aswell as seeing a fair bit of California.

Sounds like we have pretty similar trips planned!

America is designed for cars,if you dont have one then you wont see much traveling between the larger cities on a Greyhound bus as they mostly travel on the interstate highway system, as for out of the way points of interest its very hard to get to if you dont have a car and hitch hiking is prohibited on most major urban expressways, looks like Your itinerary is big cities,be aware that most American cities have areas within them that you dont really want to be in so do a bit or research on where the undesirable parts of the cities are.
Let me save you some time by advising a detour around LA,theres nothing there worth the hassle.

Well lets put it this way, i paid for a greyhound ticket from NY to LA, and i ended up paying 110 quid more for Amtrak...and i didnt have that money to spend because of my budget!

I paid 420 for my amtrak ticket i bought it through STA Travel though.

Im going from NY to Washington, Miami, Florida, New Orleans, Texas, Grand Canyon, LV, San Fran(California), LA

I would love to rent a car but we're only 22 and so it would be too expensive with the extra tax that is added!

So from Washington to Miami! That is going to be a long trip isn't it? At the moment we're leaning towards just travelling around the West Coast for a month or so. It's the last leg of the journey and the US will be fairly expensive so we figure that if the worst comes to the worst we can just chill out on the beach.

We have to go to LA as we are flying in there and so may aswell spend 2-3 nights there. I've heard that California in particular has its rough parts but will definitely try to steer clear of them, thanks!

i did 5 weeks travelling america last year and in that time i did a fair amount of california and went to vegas. I was able to rent a car from a place in san francisco (http://www.supercheapcar.com/) for a fair amount but the only problem was that i had to return the car to san francisco, which worked out ok as i had arranged a cheap flight to vegas. If you do rent a car, i recommend buying a cheap wal-mart tent as that saved us some money on our budget!!!
hope that was helpful for you pal

Hi, I can't give much advice with where's best. But i am doing 2 months travelling in America starting on the 27th June. We are starting in LA and working our way across to New York. I am also 22 so cant afford to rent a car, so we are using the greyhound bus and a company in the UK do an unlimited travel ticket for 30 or 60 days. The 60 day one is about £320. Which is fairly cheap i think, compared to flying and renting a car anyway. Our plan at the moment when we get to LA is to spend a few days there and then go up to San Francisco, and then to Las Vegas for a few days. we will then work our way across and stop in a few random places on our way to Memphis and New Orleans, and then up to Chicago and New York. We will have stops in between most likely but they will just depend on travel times.
Hope you have a good trip!
