i have bought this pack for travelling and after reading a few posts im starting to think maybe this is way too big! its the when i have the pack on it feels fine, the 40 l packs looked the same size so i thought id just get this one. if i dont full it up completely am i right in thinking it will be fine? thanks
I travelled for 2 months with the Kelty Goshawk 2200 pack. It is about 35L and it was plenty. I did not have too much extra room but it was great!
That pack is a monster-hope you kept the receipt and can exchange it for something half as big.
I agree, that is a really big pack. How long are you planning on going for? Are you planning on taking a lot of gear? How much does the pack weigh when empty? If it is big, bulky and heavy, are you really going to want to hike around with that on your back? Consider these questions first, then decide how much space you need in your pack. You may decide a smaller pack is a better way to go. Also, if you are planning on using the pack again for backpacking I would definitely recommend a smaller lighter pack.
It's the size of a Volkswagen. You know what you need to do.
the 40 l packs looked the same size
Yes, because they are roughly the same height. But I am willing to bet that the pack you choose is just a bit higher, a bit wider and deeper and also more square, thus almost doubling the volume. Add the 15 liter day pack and you have absolute overkill.
if i dont full it up completely
You'd be one of very few people if you managed to fill it up to only a volume of 40 liters. Making an educated guess I think you'll end up filling your bag up to 90 % if you keep it.
When you pack or buy a bag you keep thinking of your big adventure and consequently you get excited about all the things that you think you are going to need. When you shop you reach for larger and larger bags, bags whose size is going to match your excitement about going, not the space you really need. And when you pack the big bag the empty space temps you to fill it up. Don't fall into that trap.
