Not sure I can help with Oz Experience except to say I see a few of their busses travelling through the Blue Mountains.
Some of the features on the east coast that I enjoyed are:
- Cairns for access to Cape Tribulation, the Atherton Tablelands, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and Mission Beach
- Mackay for hiking and swimming in Eungella National Park
- Yeppoon for the beach
- Fraser Island
- Byron Bay for the vibe
- Nelson Bay
For photos I'd be inclined to carry a couple of blank memory cards, at less than $10AU for 2GB it's not that expensive to keep buying them as you fill them.
Sorry, forgot to mention the Blue Mountains and Whitsundays in my last post!

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I've heard of some of the experiences which you mentioned, so I'll definitely look into trying some of them out! Would you think 40 days is sufficient for a brilliant East Coast experience?
Also, I was thinking of getting a portable hard drive to take with my camera. Therefore any pics I take could be transferred onto that, clear the SD card, and just keep transferring the pics- what do you think?
When I did my east coast trip I did about 25 days from Sydney to Cairns, I'd say 40 days from Cairns to Melbourne will be ok.
Be careful with a portable hard drive, I dropped mine getting out of my car and that was the end of it. Fortunately there wasn't anything important on it, also will you need a computer to transfer your photos to it? There are plenty of internet cafes around, but you might find there isn't one at the crucial moment.
i m agree with timtravels, don't have hard disk with u, you can adjust with memory card and whenever u get internet just upload them on facebook and clear the memory card, it will be much better way or otherwise have some more memory card

Thank you both for your replies. It's fast approaching my departure date and I appreciate all your help before I go. I see what you mean with the SD cards being an easy option, but I fear the cost would be substantial. I have seen this hard drive which I think would be quite appropriate:
