Don't listen to people who say it's dangerous, if they've never been there. Loads of people said I would get kidnapped or murdered when I said I was planning to visit Colombia, and yet here I am, un-kidnapped and with all limbs attached. I think people just like to watch you squirm :p I'm not a smart traveller at all and I was never bothered, hustled or worse by anyone. You'll be fine. This site's got masses of information on South America, I'd just form a basic itinerary and research it bit by bit. you may stumble across things that appeal highly to you but you'd never have thought of doing.

There are places that are dangerous...Just like anywhere else. But I have never found it OVERLY dangerous. This is after ten years of coming down here. I am in Honduras right now. People say Latin America is a dangerous place because of it's admittedly volatile history. It's mostly behind them now. For instance, I HIGHLY recommend Colombia. One of the most underrated countries down here. These days, I am leaning more towards Nicaragua than Honduras, though both are beautiful.

The "Coup" in Honduras has no impact on your safety down here. It's over, for one thing, and for another, it never did anything to the infrastructure of the country anyway.

Good Luck Out There

D

P.S. You've given no time frame for your trip. It would be best to include everything you know about your time and budget for people to help you effectively. Have fun.

If you want an exciting place to go, safe place to visit alone, the place is Cuba. People are cool here, we don´t have lethal or poisonous animals, and our beaches are the best, also the weather is great and the prices are relative low. -snip-
