Well, public transport in Inverpolly/Assynt itself is pretty limited as far as I'm aware. Getting from Inverness to Ullapool is completely fine - there are bus services and the roads are just as good as anywhere else. After Ullapool, the road is still fine, but the bus services become less frequent. A bus service runs from Ullapool along the main road to Lochinver and Drumbeg so you can use this (timetable ), but if you want to get out into the countryside and explore then you're either going to need to rent a car or walk/cycle an awful lot. Type Ullapool into google maps and you'll get a good idea, if you haven't already, of where the main road (A837) takes you and where you need a car to reach.
The best way to go if you want to explore is to drive from Ullapool up to Drumrunie and take a left (the faint white line on google maps is a single track road!). You can follow that road out into the countryside itself. I know you said you have a fear of driving in the UK, but there is very little traffic in this area and you won't get terribly lost if you have an understanding of where the main settlements are in relation to each other (Ullapool, Lochinver, Drumbeg). This is the sort of area where driving is relaxing and you're unlikely to encounter any problems: you won't have busy junctions or irate drivers to deal with, you're unlikely to get badly lost and you can to an extent drive as slow as you like becauce there won't be anyone behind you.

As for the car hire, I'm taking that into consideration. I just fear that no matter how empty the roads are, my driving on the left side + beautiful scenery =
If it makes it any easier, only the main road has two lanes so you won't have to worry about driving on the wrong side!
Seriously though, if you were driving through Edinburgh or Glasgow then yes, it would be a problem, but you really have nothing to worry about in that part of the country. Go at your own pace and you'll be fine.
I know this thread is a bit old now, but it just occurred to me that if someone was doing this they probably wouldn't think to use google streetview. It only used to be the major cities that had streetview in Scotland, but now even all of the extremely remote roads up in the Highlands have it. If you have a look at your trip on there before you go then the chances of getting lost would be greatly reduced and it also gives you an idea of what the roads are like.
Not too late at all! I'm not actually going until September. I hadn't thought of google streetview at all--thanks for that!
