Anybody have both a US and UK passport? (Dual citizenship?)

I'm American by birth but both parents are British, so while I've always had American passports, I've decided to apply for my British passport so that I can live and work in the EU. However, I'm a bit confused as to how it works when I am traveling. Can I leave England on the British passport and enter into the US on my American one? Is this even legal? I know you're not technically allowed to travel with 2 different passports, but I've met a number of people with 2 (or even 3!) different nationality passports with them so I'm just wondering if (and how much) trouble I would get in if I was caught with both?

A friend of mine has dual citizenship, like you, except that his father is American and his mother is British. He's got both passports too. He lives in London at the moment and travels back to the USA several times a year. He enters and exits USA using his American passport (he'd break the law if he didn't use his American passport to enter/exit the USA). Over in the UK and Europe, he uses his British passport to enter and exit. He's got the best of both worlds.

Basically, immigration officers do not check their own countrymen for visa stamps of other countries on the passport as long as it's is genuine and valid for travel. So what my friend has been doing is basically trouble-free.
