Hello!
I've been to Beijing many times, and I always stay at a small, inexpensive hotel (there are several) just off of Wangfujing Street. Wanfujing is a bit too touristy for some people, but it's got some good shopping, with a lot of street food as well as western food and a good Beijing duck restaurant. And it's not far to the subway, or the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.
Between Wangfujing and the Forbidden City are a lot of hutongs (centuries-old Bejing homes).
BTW: take heavy winter clothes if you are visiting Beijing in January- it gets COLD!
Thanks very much for your help, going to look for places in Wangfujing.
In regards to winter clothes, are there any places there that we can buy these from cheaply?
Just because we're travelling over from India which will be warm so won't have many layers! We could pack for winter as well, just means carrying them throughout India
Thanks for your help
Sure, there are lots of stores that sell winter clothes. Your best bet would be a 'supermarket' (which in China sells much more than food). If you buy clothes on the street, you'll have to be a good negotiator, or you'll actually end up paying more, for worse quality.
I am a Chinese, so I think I can give you some suggestion.
If you want spend your new year evening in Beijing, the best place to stay is hou-hai bar street,
the street is just alone the hou-hai lake, and so many different style pub and cafe in this street.
you will find many western people are drinking there, talking or enjoying the music show till the
momnent 0:00 (even to the moring)...
and in the day time you may visit wangfujing , that is not far away from here by taxi, wangfujing is just a shopping area, if you are a better bargingner, you will get some cheap in some free-market.
By the way, it will spend you a whole day in great wall , because it is very far away from downtown.
