Airport Layovers

Hello Everybody,

As an American you can leave the Airport for 48 hours without getting a Visa. Simply show your passport, visa of your destination country and connecting flight ticket. So at least you're not trapped at the Airport.

Personally I'd recommend you leave your luggage at the Airport and jump on the Maglev Train which goes crazy fast (300+ kph) and gets you into downtown Shanghai in no time at all. Wander around the city, then head back to the Airport for your flight...

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

16 hours will feel loooooooong in an airport! The most I've done is 8 is even that was a bit miserable. I'd definitely head into Shanghai and have a wander round. As long as you leave plenty of time to get back before your outbound flight, you'll be fine.

Yep, like mentioned above, you won't regret it.

That Maglev train goes fast, see .
From the end station you can take the metro towards the Pudong area or just across the river near the Bund. Both are great for walking around, admiring the great skyline. If you can, go up some of the largest buildings for great views.

Check some other photos in my gallery of Shanghai if you wish. But really, go into the city, I loved it!

I'm Irish

good idea, Thanks. My luggage should be forwarded by my airline anyway, so I should be free to go to Shanghai. I don't have a visa but I could show them my onward flight I guess.

This is looking like a real good idea.
Thanks Utrecht & Chix

Since you're Irish you better start researching whether you require a Transit Visa, or not. I have a feeling that you can't leave the Airport without one.

Good luck.

Nope, the country doesn't fall under the 48 hours regime, but:

Visas are not required of any foreign passport holders who:

  • hold air tickets to a final destination outside China and who have booked seats on international airlines flying directly through China
  • stay in the transit city for less than 24 hours;
  • leaving the airport transit area is allowed
