So im finally living my dream of traveling australia. I turned 18, got my visa, and booked my ticket. and now, as much as i love it, i am lost.
Im flying to perth on march 22nd, but have the option of just staying in sydney and not catching my connection.
anyways i dont know much about the australian weather seasons or how to follow them. but i would like to try my best to stay in good weather. I have 6 months before i need to come home so ive got lots of time to explore, and there are a few places i would love to see. but i have no idea how to organize my trip so its best weather, and most direct to my desired destinations. i dont want to fly back and forth between country sides.
im goin this alone, and with not a ton of money, so i will likley be working to either make money, or food/acommodation.
but here is what i am hopping to do as far as play goes.
lots of sightseeing! i am a nature freak and will probably puke with excitment when i see my first kangaroo. so both geological, and biological
i am big on hiking, climbing, and aimlesly wandering. so some nice day trails to get lost on are a goal
i would like to spend some (not too much) time on the beach relaxing, maybe give nude sun bathing a try.
and some places/things i absolutley have to see are coober pedy, twelve apostles, uluru, i would like to try surfing, kayak/canoe. i am really active and half monkey so scrambler hikes are my absolute favourite!
Hi Matt, Australian seasons are:
summer - december to february
autumn - march to may
winter - june to august
spring - september to november
It sounds like you'll be in Australia for Autumn and Winter so I'd try and travel the southern part during Autumn to avoid cool temperatures and head north for winter which is the ideal time to travel up there. If you're going to Perth, I highly recommend the south coast around to Esperance there are heaps of beautiful beaches, check my gallery. From there you could travel across the nullarbor and up through the centre, visit Coober Pedy, Uluru, the Kings Canyon and the Devil's marbles. I'd go all the way to Darwin and possibly over to Broome if you have time, there's some great stuff in north western WA like the Bungle Bungles, Tunnel Creek and the Prison Boabs. Up near Darwin is Litchfield NP and Kakadu. You could then fly from Darwin to Cairns and make your way down the east coast to Melbourne, don't forget to do a reef trip from Cairns and to check out the Daintree while you're up there, Fraser Island is also a must and surfing at Byron Bay is well worth it.
If you're keen on doing some walks, I can recommend
- The Stirling Ranges in WA and the hike up Bluff knoll.
- The Larapinta Trail in in central Australia, it's a big hike but you could do some sections to get a real feel for the area, the part that runs up Standley Chasm and up on top of the range is awesome.
- Fraser Island, most people take a tour but the ferry is free for people on foot and the hiking tracks go everywhere! Awesome scenery and jungle vibe.
- Blue Mountains west of Sydney, hikes walks everywere and some interesting camping areas.
- The Grampians in Victoria, great hikes.
- Tasmania, amazing hiking and mountain ranges. If you have time go here for extended hiking!
If you need any more help feel free to send me a message.
- Tim
