Beaches around chesapeake bay

Travelling to US in August with my husband & kids. We're staying near New York first with family & then want to have about 10 days travelling to Washington DC, Shenandoah area & Williamsburg. We then want to stop off for a few days to explore before heading north to return to NY. Can anyone recommend a fairly quiet beach resort around the Chespeake Bay region that might be suitable? Thanks!

If you get over to Ocean City Maryland you should find some lodging on the beach.

Thanks, will look into it.

About a 90 minute drive from Williamsburg and just south of Virginia Beach you'll find the little town of Sandbridge, a tiny spit of land that is actually part of the Outer Banks and actually borders North Carolina. Compared to most of the beach areas around there (including Ocean City) it's a much more quiet community and you can rent houses right on, or near the beach. It's one of my favorite beach areas near there, and the drive back which takes you up the eastern shore of Maryland (as opposed to highway on route 95) will be both shorter and a bit more interesting.

If you aren't wanting to rent a house, but stay in a hotel, either Virginia Beach or Ocean City might be the way to go as they have plentiful hotel accommodations at all price ranges.

We generally like quieter places so love the sound of this area around the outer banks. We need to think about if we can rent a place to stay or will need a hotel. Thanks for the advice. Will definitely travel up the eastern shore of Maryland on our way back.

Hi there. A brief history lesson: before they built the bridge over the Bay to the ocean the beach communities along the eastern bank of the Chesapeake were considered "the beach". Those communities are now permanent homes now but still offer fun. The problem with the beaches there can be summed up in one word: jelly fish. They come in late July and make swimming impossible.

So that's why we all go to the ocean to go to the beach. If you are going to be in Williamsburg as mentioned Virginia Beach is close. But it's hardly quiet, it is very similar to Ocean City, MD and dozens of other beach towns up the coast. In other words fairly big and crowded. North of OC are the Delaware beach towns such as Dewey, Bethany etc. but they are mostly large homes for rent. But seeing as the economy is still in question you may be able to rent a house for only a few days.

If I can make one suggestion it would be to look into Broadkill Beach, Delaware, which is just north of Rehoboth, Dewey etc. . My neighbor had a house there and we rented it several times. Amazing place that sounds like it's right up your alley. Accessed by a single road that cuts through a wildlife refuge before dead ending at Broadkill. There is nothing except maybe 50-75 houses and a general store for the basics. We had nightly fires on the beach with wood we had gathered from the beach or off the road. During the day the beach is pretty much deserted. The best news is the homes are all relatively small so you won't find only MacMansions at high costs to rent. If the kids get bored the boardwalk at Rehobeth Beach is only about 30 minutes away. There is also restaurants and an outlet mall in that same area.

That's really helpful, didn't know about the jellyfish! & many thanks for the links. Will certainly investigate Broadkill before making any further plans. Sounds great, just what we need after a fairly busy schedule before we fly back home from Newark. Thanks again!
