I have an early flight so I wanted to know how far is the airport from Ho Chi Minh City. I'm trying to decide if I should just stay at a hotel close to the airport or if I can still stay at the backpacker area.
I arrived at night and it took about 40 mins from what I can remember. I just looked it up and its 4 miles to the city center and De Tham is pretty close to that. Do you only have a lay over or something? I'd definitely make the effort to go to De Tham. I loved that city.
I'm coming in by bus from Phnom Penh. I'll be in HCMC for a day and a half. Any recommendation to where I should stay?

Some of the buses from PP will end their journey in the Pham Ngu Lao (PNL) area of HCM. This is the KSR area in HCM. Many places to stay under $15/night. I prefer to stay in mini hotel alley, just off PNL, around the corner from De Tham St. I just walk from hotel to hotel and ask what they are charging. Almost all of them are the same. Tall & skinny. The alley is pretty quiet because only motos can navigate the narrow alley. has photos of De Tham & mini hotel alley. I have stayed at Dong and Xinh Hotel. Both were about $10/night a few years ago.
If your bus arrives away from PNL area, I would take a taxi or pedicab over to that area. Fare will only be a few $s. Most city, tunnel & delta tours leave from this area. Good luck with your planning.
