Here's a little bit more detail: MUNI runs the buses, the famous cable cars, and the MUNI-metro (trolley/subway within the city limits). You can purchase single- or multi-day passports for the MUNI, and it's a really good deal if you plan to use the cable cars (which would be $5 per trip otherwise!).

As stated earlier, there is also a regional transit system called BART that runs to Oakland and to SFO (airport). You won't be using this as much as MUNI, so just by single-ride tickets as needed for BART. Your BART ticket is based on distance travelled, and you purchase them from automated machines in the stations.

MUNI passports can be a little hard to find. They sell them at the MUNI kiosk near the Union Square terminus of the Hyde/Powell cable car line, on the street above the Powell St. BART station.
