Ok so only joined this site today! In hindsight maybe should have joined a month ago but better late than never! I am flying into Phuket tomorrow & I want to spend a day or 2 there to adjust & maybe get some dresses tailored! I've heard you can get some great dresses this way-Then hopefully Ko Tao to do the PADI diving although I've never dived before! Bans not sure of the spelling has been recommended if anyone has any feedback it would be great! After that I really have no clue, would love to go a little of the beaten track but as travelling on my own for the 1st time not sure if this is a good idea! I like anything outdoors with a hint of adventure!
Any tips will be greatly appreciated!
Are you skipping Bangkok? Phuket is the most expensive place to visit in Thailand. Try not to waste your entire trip only at beach areas. Chiang Mai is also popular with women.

Interested....why is Chiang Mai popular with women.....i'm flying into Bejiing on 24 Oct with 2 other peeps I've been emailing on here and going to hopefully cover (all these) Thailand,Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam to then end up in Singapore for departure to Perth mid December. Really just doing research and interested to hear other peeps knowledge.

Anyhoo, never been to phuket heard its amazing & amazingly expensive so yeah spend a day there, and get out! Plenty of prettier beaches im sure.
Koh Tao - amazing, little bit of paradise, make sure you take the daytrip to the three little islands naan yuang island i think its called - i never got to go due to their being horrrible weather on the only free day i had left there sniff sniff. Ill get there one day - my friends went a few weeks before me though and said amazing/must do, hire a quad bike and go around the island. Never did my padi (was going to but ended up going to the philippines...anyhoo) I went and did mine with Buddha View diving - great place, good atmosphere, lots of friendly people and lovely staff! Stayed in a room which only cost 800baht and it was really nice with hto water - there are cheaper rooms. Oh also i didnt do my padi i did the single day dive but when i go back i will and ill do it with them. the place is on Chalok Ban - its realllly nice, white sand and lots of little beaches and 2 min walk and your into an excellent spot for going snorkelling. Also you must try Ally the Pancakes man pancakes...amazing!!! He will be outside the 7-eleven every night, he puts on an amazing show haha!! And for food go to Tuktas - 10 minute walk from Buddha View resort - they have the best/cheapest food and the best pad thai i ever tasted!!
If you can definately go to chiang mai even just for a few days ( i went for 5 and lovveed it) there is SO MUCH to do!! Definately visit mae sa waterfalls - stunning - bring food - no alcohol though, um doi sothep temple is also amazing and you can see alllll of chiang mai from the top, i didnt do this but my friend went to patara elephant camp and had a really amazing day there - costs £120 but she said was well worth it (own elephant for the day, shown how to clean/bath/care for it, play with it, go on a trek etc etc she looked like the enjoyed it also and the elephants looks uper healthy!! I did go to tiger kingdom and had such a good time, i fell in love with the tigers and they are most definately not drugged up - very very very lively shall we say hehe. I went in with the medium sized ones ( iwas terrified and literally stayed in the encloser no longer than 5 minutes!) but i also went in with the 2-5 month old baby ones and they were soooooo cute!! What else is there to do-of try and go at the weekend and definately visit the sunday night market - its so much fun, lots of haggling to be done, not that i did because its so bloody cheap anyway but they also have a food market in the same area and its all good food cooked fresh and under 50 baht!!

Not everyone who visits Thailand spends all of their time only at beach areas. Besides you can find beaches in many countries in the world if you only want to sit on the sand or swim. In Chiang Mai you can take tours or even treks to visit local hill tribes like the Long Neck Women, visit Golden Triangle, take a short cooking course; see some of the places in Thailand that make it unique!
If Bangkok is not on your list of places to see it is also a worthwhile visit too! Why go all the way to Thailand and not see Bangkok?

Guys this is all great-Glad you said Phuket is expensive my 1st night stayed in Surin fab hotel but a far cry from the ridiculously cheap prices I had been told about.
Booked my ticket for Koh Tao yesterday. (Shortly before my crd card went missing so a disaster of a day then after that!)
Chang MAi is dofe on my list-Timewise to cross over into Laos maybe for 3 days & do the tubing any ideas???
How long to spend in Chang MAi?

Chiang Mai is a little less touristy as it has more of a local feel to it from what I've gathered. More countryside-esque. As far as Phuket, as everyone else has stated, it's a relatively expensive area. I'm going in April and have only planned 3-4 days max - spending the majority of my time up north in Chiang Mai and in Bangkok.
I noticed you're also traveling around Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. I'm covering those three before heading into Thailand in April. Hope you have a blast!
Chang Mai sounds amazing-Am in Koh Tao and booked in to do my PADI with Bans Dive School. Next week I think I'll venture up north any suggestions on the most direct route to Chang Mai from Koh Tao? Then thinking of going to Bangkok then back to the islands?
Although I am going to Chang Mai on my own and saw a headkline about a New Zealand girl who died there last wk? And 2 other people staying at same hotel. Is it safe to go alone?
Any recommendations as to who to book an elephant trek with or safe reasonable accommodation?
