Hi Tom,
Everyone seems to have a different view on this topic. Some people think they are a waste of money but its all personal opinion and experience. I am also traveling on my own so I felt more comfortable booking a tour for when I first land. I am going with OzIntro in May this year. They have a 1 week tour and a 3 day tour, watch with the 7 day tour as the hostel they use doesn’t seem that great. I ended up going with the 3 day tour because of some of the horrific things I read online…
Claire
hey im going to for work and play package with STA, im doing mine in Melbourne i arrive on the 13th december. it worked out £337 for four nights and great ocean road day trip and neighbours day tour. Also they sort out all your tax file, bank accounts etc, i know its seems expensive, but i guess its worth it as everyone else who will be staying at the hostel will be in the same postion so good to meet ppl at the start!!!
Claire, Suzy, thanks for some top advice
There is an STA Branch near where I live, so I'll go chat to them...
The impression I get from OZ Intro is that its more suitable for 18-21 Yr olds, and whilst I like a party, I will be 27 when in OZ, so will not have the energy to party every night!
I shall keep looking around...
well the Oz intro was only available in sydney, so thats why i went with STA also i booked other withgs with them, so i got a good discount!!
Yeah OzIntro does seem to have 'party group' attached to it. This is also partly why I changed to the 3 days... As much as I like a good party, not everynight!
you only need to go with bunac or wtc or even IEP if you want to WORK in Oz. They set up a bank account for you and do all your tax prep.. get you temp jobs .. so you can work and travel. if you arent planning on working and travel then you dont need to go with one of these countries. i went for 6 months with WTC and had a great time.. I met people who went through IEP and Bunac and there's no huge difference between these companies.
If you want a tour you can also try oz trekkers. they run in Oz and you can set it up when you get there. Also, Oz is pretty safe that if you want to travel by yourself and meet people (not on a tour group) you'd be fine. I wasn't going to waste 2000K to go with STA that's a hardcore annoying itinerary. I know people who have done tours with STA and they say they got their monies worth, but I am an adventurer so I'd travel by myself and meet cool people.
Hey I checked out bunac and it's slightly more expensive then the STA work and play package!
Hi,
I was intending to book a package too, spent ages researching into different options, but I have finally decided it isn't worth the money. I figure if I can't walk into a bank and open a bank account myself or fill out a few forms for Medicare/Tax file number, then maybe I shouldn't be going travelling alone!!
So I plan to do it solo. Totally understand if people want to book a tour to start off with to meet people and so it doesn't seem quite so scary though! Will probably really wish I booked a package when I get there, we'll see!
Haha Tracy thats very true!
