how efficient is bus travel in south america?

I am planning a trip accross south america this time next year, starting at Rio de Janeiro and ending in Machu Picchu stopping at Iguassu Falls and La Paz for reasonable periods along the way. I'm finding it difficult to work out how much time i need to leave for the travelling between each of my main destintions whilst staying efficient but also relaxed and allowing myself time to enjoy the journey. Any facts, help/ideas or past experience would be much appreciated. Cheers x

Buses in Argentina are very efficient, regular and luxurious! You can expect fully reclining seats with blankets and pillows, a decent meal with wine, and snacks/drinks served throughout the journey.

I can send you the bus schedules by pm and do your own homework from there, many travelers in Brazil, size of continental USA, fly within the country, long distance, as in the US.

South America is enormous. Always give yourself an extra few days.

You will have some marathon 50, 60, 70 hour bus trips, take care with your health, rest up the day after arrival, I once took a bus from Los Angeles, CA in USA some 5200 km., 4 days, 3 nights to my home in Eastern USA, slept 20 hours after arrival!

Yeh that would be really helpful, thanks.

My plan was to travel by bus so i can see more of the continent. However, at the moment i'm just trying to figure out how much time and money will be needed for traveling via plane and bus and see which one will best fit my puposes.

I'm likely to have limited time over there, so long bus rides as well as lots of rest days might not be the best option. Thanks for the advice.
