it is almost impossible to compare the two. i will try to give a neutral view...
from a budget point of view: india would make more sense. also, if you don't want to spend too much money on flight tickets, you can find cheap tickets to singapore/kuala lumpur. from kuala lumpur air asia offers cheap tickets to india. as i read you're from zimbabwe. india has relatively good connections with east africa.
for south america, you will have to budget at least 2-4 times more than for india.
what you can expect:
- south america: naturally very beautiful and diverse, however culturally a bit monotonous on a long run. but still a very nice and beautiful experience.
- india: culturally very rich and probably to most remarkable place in the world for any traveller. you may not like it or you may love it. but definitely memorable.
should you want to stretch out your trip but don't want to spend all your time in india, you can relatively easily hop over to south east asia or china. all these regions will be similar from a budget point of view.
i would not listen to any preferences but to what my heart would tell me to go...

If you like culture, food, and crowds of people, choose India. But if you prefer nature, choose South America. Personally, if I had the choice, I'd choose the latter. I'd love to take a boat ride down the Amazon...
