For Bangkok a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road (Nana area) might be okay for you. In this area you have hotels in all price ranges, restaurants you can walk to, travel agencies for tours and plane tickets, nightlife and several malls and lots of street vendors. Best of all you can use the overhead rail service called the Skytrain.
For hotel recommendations mention a baht or at least a dollar value you want to spend per night on a room. Don't say cheap or economy, etc. Use a money range because cheap doesn't mean the same for everyone. Hotels with air and private toilets in Bangkok from around 600 baht to 6000 baht per night!
From the Airport there is a new Airport Rail Link. That rail service can bring you from the airport to the Pratunam area for as little as 45 baht. From one of the last three stops for Pratunam you can use a meter taxi (using the meter only) to take you to your hotel. To the Sukhumvit area, from Ratchaprorop or Makassan the fare will be less than 100 baht. The Rail Link also connects to the subway at Makassan and to the Skytrain at Phaya Thai. But no Skytrain if you arrive from N. America late at night - rail service stops at midnight.
You can change your money over to Thai baht at the airport 24 hours a day. No problem with Canadian money. Bring currency that is not old, dirty and beat up. Stick with the larger size currency so you don't need a bag to carry your cash with you. Travelers checks are easy to cash but there is a fee of 33 baht per check so don't waste the fee on cheap value checks. If you intend to use a debit or credit card you must notify your bank or credit union that you will be out of the country before you leave home. There is a fee of 150 baht per ATM use so take out the maximum you can at one time. When you fly home there will be a bank money changer available to change your baht back into a currency you can take with you.

Soi Rambuttri (or similar name) in Bangkok is a good place to stay. It's right in backpacker land (and close to Khoasan Rd) but a bit more relaxed - loads of bars and street stalls selling spring rolls! We stayed in a budget hotel called 'New Siam' which has decent, clean rooms and a small swimming pool. Careful when you look online as there are a new 'New Siam's (I, II and III, I think) - find the one closest to Rambuttri and you're good to go!
koh san road has loads of affordable places to stay which have rooftop pools and massage and spa's. i have stayed in the D and D inn, and the Dang Derm a good few times and was always happy with them, staff are only okay, but the facilities and location are perfect, its about 700b a night and you get breakfast with that too, there are cheaper rooms with less comfortable beds, (pretty much a plank) but they all have aircon. you can just arrive on the day and get a room, no need to prebook.
are you planning on chilling out or partying? koh phangan has some amazing really quiet beaches, haad yao and Thong nai pan Yai are my fav's, they are quiet and peaceful, more of an older crowd and families, but if you are looking for a party then head straight to haad rin, ( where full moon party is) i stayed in baan talay which was really budget, if you have anything valuable with you i wouldnt recommend staying in a budget place in haad rin, i also stayed in sunrise resort another year during the full moon period, its kinda pricey but very secure and right on the beach, has a pool and really nice rooms.
No access to the Skytrain, subway and the new Airport Rail Link in the Khao San Road area! If you like to be around really young backpacker types, many of them teenage boys, you will find them in the KSR area!
Other areas of Bangkok also have good places to stay at in all price ranges. It depends on what you want to do in Bangkok.
When you need hotel recommendations always mention a price range. Basic hotel rooms, including air, start around 600 baht. High end hotels top out over 6000 baht per night.
