France to Spain

Morning all,

The bus from Paris to Madrid takes 17 hours and costs about 80 euros, which is slower, less comfortable than the train.

By train (overnight):

.

By air: Cheap shuttle to Beauvais airport, then Ryanair flight to Madrid.

Any way you go you are going to see very little. By bus it will mostly be toll roads and countryside. By train, it's night.

9th August will be very busy. You need to book something immediately, once you have decided.

Thanks Cyberia.

I wont be flying out of Madrid until the end of August, so I have about 3 weeks to get down there - no need to do it all in one go!

I will visit Barcelona in between, but is there anywhere else anyone thinks I should definitely visit?

Right now booked up to travel to Paris on the 9th - so any recommendations for places to stay in Paris? Any good places to have a few beers?

Hi luke,

if you are on a budget :
I have already stayed already in "le Village Hotel", pretty clean and located in Montmatre (near Pigalle -carefull at night don't go in the "hostess bars" and le Sacre Coeur), it is not down town Paris but by Metro very near by you reach any place you'd like to visit : http://www.villagehostel.fr/?page_id=8

The next one is very famous and you need to nook as soon as possible :http://www.youngandhappy.fr/
I never stayed there but it is well located, lot of places around to have beers

another way to travel is "covoiturage" (car sharing), it is begining to be very popular in France now, check www.covoiturage.fr

another tip try to avoid moving during week end of summer, it is black out, over priced ticket and trafic jams all over France

good trip

What's a traffic jam? I have to travel 25 miles before I even stand a chance of hitting any real traffic.

I live in NW France and people stop in at local supermarkets to get food and fuel before rushing off on the long journey down south but it is very quiet here this time of year. Some shops shut while people head south for 2-4 weeks and much of northern France is easier because so many have gone to southern France.

I live in open countryside where it is nice and quiet with fantastic views and prefer this to crowded southern Europe this time of year.
