$1000 is pretty much all i have with a one way ticket to the UK any advice on how to make money while there and how to get to other countries?? My plan so far is using helpx for free stays in exchange for work but anybody kno some cheap or free places to stay? Thank you
I've had good experiences with Couch Surfing both travelling and hosting. The key is, trust your gut, and make sure you stay with people with good references. It's also great because you can stay with locals to give you a really good feel for a place, and they can give you insider tips for where to go and what to see (and they know what's cheap).
If you're in the UK, remember that in London all state museums are free! British Museum, Tate Modern, etc....all free (or by donation, but if you dont' have anything it doesn't matter).
If you want to get around Europe, and are your friends...also watch out for sales (Ryan Air is having one right now).
For working, where are you coming from? If you're from somewhere like Australia or Canada you can get a working holiday visa for the UK (and other countries) if you're under 30, but I'm not sure about the US. Might have some kind of option like that too. You also might be able to pick up some freelance work under the table giving English lessons.

That's not to scare you, but with a one-way ticket and only $1000, it's not sure if UK immigration will let you enter. Be sure to have a definite plan lined out to tell them in case you are asked. If they only suspect you of trying to work illegally, you'll be sent back to California. UK immigration have become very strict.
With such a skinny budget why are you travelling to such an expensive destination? From California you have easy access to some of the cheapest places on the planet where your $1,000 could go a LONG way...
$1,000 in the UK and still trying to travel in Europe... that's my definition of torture...

1,000 buckaroos won't get you very far in the UK nor Europe. Even with Couchsurfing/hitching...
And you want to work 'illegally'. Unless you use travel writing/photography or something of the ilk.
You could try working in hostels - but that depends on need than anything else.
No experience... first solo trip... a measly $1,000 and a one way ticket to one of the most expensive destinations possible - with strict immigration/working laws too... honestly, I think you're setting yourself up for disaster.
