I can't imagine the job market for photography is any less competitive in Australia than the UK. Melbourne is probably a good bet for creative industry jobs but if I were you I'd concentrate on getting some paid work first.
To be honest, unless you're self-employed, trying to make something like photography a worthwhile career (money + job satisfaction) is pretty difficult.
Coming from someone who has worked in the media for the last six years - believe me when I tell you that unless you are at the very top of the tree, making a living in this sector is getting harder by the day.

I definitely know oh too well how competitive it is and how making a living from it is tough unless your at the top of your game. I guess it would be wishful thinking I can get a paid job as a photographer whilst away
I should have also mentioned that I don't mean as a photographer as such, although it's my passion I know full well from various internships and work placements in the UK that working as a 'photographer' and soley that is very VERY tough to get a foot in the door as it were. I'm going to be looking for anything photography related, be it at a picture library doing office based stuff or at a production company as a junior retoucher.
No doubt I will end up working in a bar or something!

I don't want to be the person to crush your dreams but the media in general is in a period of huge change.
Print models aren't coping with the digital shift and more importantly they can't make money from it. Nobody has successfully found a way to get people to pay (worthwhile amounts) cash for online content.
Newspapers are floundering, magazines are struggling and all the while the net is taking over and saturating people (with mostly crap) content...so much so that media consumers are unable to distinguish between good content and bad.
I work for a weekly newspaper and our snapper has 25 years of experience. He's the best photographer I know and yet he gets paid £17k. He laughs at some of the work done by today's 'photographers' who with little more than a college certificate and a digital camera assume the position of photographer.
If you want to try it anyway...I would say keep up with digital trends (flicker, instagram etc).
