Where you go depends on what you like.
I liked Sydney down to Melbourne but many go to Cairns, etc.
I liked the north island of New Zealand. Lots of nice little towns to visit. Rotorua, etc. But many prefer the glaciers, Queenstown and scenery (which is pretty much the same the world over).
Why not pop into Thailand on the way and spend 30 days (visa free) there?
Lots of the must-sees are on the east coast of Australia, I highly recommend snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and visiting the Whitsundays but your time of year for this is not ideal. You're travelling during the "wet season" for the north of Australia which might mean high humidity and some local flooding.
Other things on the east coast I'd recommend are camping on Fraser Island, Sydney and the Blue Mountains and possibly a visit to Tasmania if you're in to hiking.
If you can stand the heat then a visit to central Australia specifically Uluru and Kata Tjuta are awesome as well.

I'm also travelling to Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne in Oz, though Canberra is for a family visit and not really a touristy place, so I've been told. When I'm in Adelaide I'm going to Kangaroo Island, which looks fab, and I'd never heard of it before my friend in Oz suggested we go there.
If you're travelling alone and want to see the sights, I'd suggest joining a group tour. I did two of these in America with Trek America, and got to see so many places in 3 weeks, and I'm doing one on New Zealand's North Island visiting Wellington, Auckland, Rototua, Taupo, Waitomo and Bay of Islands.
These group trips are great for meeting new people, and there's loads out there for all lengths, accommodation types and budgets =D
