Hi everyone, i am a 24 year old girl who is going to be travelling through New Zealand for about 2 weeks on my own from the begginning of November. I am pretty worried about it as i have never been there and always travelled with someone. any advice would be really welcome, or anyone who is looking to go to New Zealand around that date please let me know. thanks so much
New Zealand is a very easy country to travel through independently, with superb backpacker infrastructure. and have daily busses everywhere you could think of to go to, and you'll meet plenty of other independent travellers in the countless hostels which can be found everywhere. Early November should be a great time for travelling around as well; spring should be in full swing, but high season will still be 6 weeks away.
Two weeks is a bit short to get a comprehensive overview of the country, so what I'd recommend (assuming you fly into and out of Auckland) is to spend 4-5 days in Auckland and around (go north to the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga, maybe), then fly to Christchurch, and do a loop there in the remaining 9-10 days, hitting Lake Tekapo (my absolute favorite place in all of New Zealand; a perfect place to unwind; make sure to hike to the top of Mt. John for awesome hot chocolate at the observatory cafe and a view of infinity), Mt. Cook, Queenstown and Fox + Franz Josef glacier before returning to Christchurch. (The return by public transport would be with a bus to Greymouth, and then the TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch.)
NZ is a pretty safe place and I should know since I was raised there. You should always take the same precautions that you would take anywhere else when travelling alone as a female i.e. don't wear too many jewellery, put your credit cards and cash in different places. Make sure your passport is with you at all times and don't walk alone in dark parks. Always walk on the street with the most people and most light. Don't walk and talk on the phone, don't walk and listen to music etc. These are just the normal things that I do when travelling alone.
But like I said, NZ is a safe place and you will find that people in hostels are pretty friendly. Have fun and I hope the weather is good in Nov for you! It will be the end of Spring so you should get some warm weather!

I just arrived yesterday (came from NZ & OZ) & am looking for a travel mate as well..I am pretty open about the destinations I wanna go to, but Vegas, Seattle & Canada are definetly a must for me as well..Los Angeles not so much, coz I ve been there & didnt like it THAT much, coz it is completly superficial, but I wouldnt mind going there again for a day or two Anyways, if you d love to get in touch, just contact me via my profile or facebook...Claudia Tonn (location: San Francisco)

PS: I am a member of couchsurfing & have almost 40 references & NO you dont need a credit card..this is just if you want to get verified which you dont have too..it is a way to make it safer, but if you have heeps of references that makes it in my opinion even safer.
