Hi, I am Flying into San Fransisco in the middle of November and i am travelling alone. I am just looking for some advice, i heard that the grey hound is the cheapest option to get around? Also i want to go to LA, Las Vegas, san Fransisco and Seattle and then go up to Calgary in Canada for the 15th December, any ideas how long would this take? do many people travel alone through America? Im very worried about this so any advice would be really appreciated.
I don't have a lot of experience with traveling via Greyhound buses, but I do know that they take a long time. The bus stops in almost every town on the way. Traveling to and from each of these places will take about a day. It just depends on whether you are willing to sacrifice that much time to save some money.

I have never heard of couchsurfing but what a wonderful idea. I would be happy to enroll and have folks stay here but how would I start? If I am traveling alone I'd never consider staying with someone who had no references and as a first time host I'm not sure how I would go about getting my first guest.

I joined, paid via credit card. Then they mail a postcard to your address. You are not 'verified' until you answer the postcard. This way 'couchsurfers' knows you really are the person you claim to be. A guy that lives in Vegas got in touch with me and invited me to a couchsurfers get-together. We have another meeting this Thurs. I will ask the head guy in Vegas the 'first guest' question. Mike
