Australian planning a trip to USA, where should we go?

My friends and I are from Australia and are planning a trip to USA december 2012 for about 4 weeks.

If you are flying from Sydney..Qantas is the best one and you can fly till NY and it takes 22 hrs to reach NY. You can have a blasting celebrations there...and you can spend your Christmas in NY if you have more money Vegas is great place to have fun fun and more fun..so you will definitely forget you...

There are far far FAR better times to come than December! December means fully booked planes, high prices and terrible weather. In my opinion, LA should be at the bottom of any list, but add San Francisco and New Orleans. New York is a must, but it is EXPENSIVE.

Expect plenty of rain, snow, high winds and crowds in December.

Washington DC is also interesting - Smithsonian Museum is great, and the surrounding Virginia/Maryland/Pennsylvania area is full of Civil War historical sites. , Virginia is a real treat - see life in Colonial times.

Ok, well if you are coming in Dec, you will have higher prices but you'll catch a lot of x-mas celebration as you travel. NYC is wild at New Years but the prices will be outrageous even in the cheapest places and its really not one of the better hostel nights.

In NY, the NHL Islanders are the cheapest tickets in the NHL. You can probably get seats, albeit not good ones for under $10 on some of the reseller sites. You probably will have to spend a fair bit for NFL tickets though even for the bad teams. Can't advise you on the NBA, but college sports should be in full swing.

How are you planning on getting around? Buses? or renting a car?

If you are renting a car, drop me a line and I'll happily throw you a roadtrip plan down the east coast (I just did one over the last 3 weeks).

Hey,

Are you guys still planning on going?
From what I've heard Miami is nice but not really a 'must see'. I'm doing about a 5 week trip and I'm going to base it LA so do theme parks and maybe party up a bit. What I have on my list is the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Yosemite national park, San Fran, then I might fly to the East Coast and see NYC. Jetstar fly out of Sydney to Hawaii so you could add that to your itin and get a domestic flight to the USA. I'm not familar with flights from Sydney but strategic airlines and virgin airlines both have discounted and reasonable fares out of Melbourne so prob the same with Sydney. I wouldn't go with Qantas unless you wanna pay $$$$.

Pam.

Pat,
As others have said, Dec. is a very tough month to visit the US. Much of the country could be covered in snow, planes full and hotels charging top prices. I was going to vote NYE in Vegas, but finding a room at a decent price will be difficult. We do have , booking a few weeks in advance will probably be your cheapest option. Fireworks over the Strip are free, but everything else will be pricey. The week between X-mas & NYE is one of the most expensive weeks to be in Vegas. No bargains outside of the hostels.
