I've been travelling Oz for just over a month now. Started in Sydney, flew to Cairns and currently working down the East Coast back to Sydney to find a job. I'm constantly worried about my money and found I would eat about one meal a day to begin with, a normal thing apparently. Currently I'm in Rainbow Beach chilling after my Fraser Island camping trip.
My fave hostels so far are Base Airlie beach and Calypso Inn in Cairns (best hostel and great for socialising, something every night too and Ozintro people always end up here).
So many travellers go to Australia and think they can pick up work there. Few do, and if they do it's often very hard work for very little money.
You could try an employment agency but you are just one of many wanting a job, and you will not have a permanent address, which will count against you, as in that you could move on at any time so would not get any kind of employment for more than a day at a time.

It's certainly true that most backpacker jobs don't earn a whole lot, and that if as a backpacker you don't have an in demand skill (IT, healthcare, construction) the jobs you can expect to find are better for stretching travelling money than for actually allowing you to save up. But it's certainly my impression and experience that the vast majority of backpacker who go to Australia on a WHV do end up working in one job or another.
Additionally, it's been my personal experience that being a traveller can actually be helpful in getting a job. A significant number of Australians have backpacked Europe in their time, fondly remember the experience, and everything else being equal, would like to give a fellow traveller a break.

Sorry Cyberia - but your comment on 'few' backpackers getting jobs is just not right. In fact, completely wrong! 150,000 + people come here each year on working holiday visas. Some may not get the job they want (too high expectations?), some may end up having to travel to find work. But the majority get some work, travel, meet people, etc etc.
The key is being flexible, getting away from where there are too many backpackers hunting for work, and not expecting a career job.
