I am planning to visit Thailand? I have read and heard about this place a lot of times. I surely want to check out the pristine beaches, beautiful temples. I want to know how the Thai food is like? Is it too spicy? What are the delicious Thai food items which I can savor (that are not too spicy) on my Thailand vacation? And what interesting places I can visit?
Many sites like this one have travel guides eg wikipaedia, tripadvisor, travelfish etc. Check them out to see what attracts your interest. Temples in Thailand I can recommend Ayuttaya (numerous wats) and Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai (its a biggy).
I'm not big on spicy food so I always say phet nid noi (spicy little bit). No problems. All the main places visited by tourists have menus with english descriptions. If not just ask.
As to what you want to see and do will depend on how long you have. Transport can be time consuming. Most of your questions can be answered through google.
Richard.. just go to Phuket.. what a place..you will surely have a great time there. Near by places make you feel great. You can plan anywhere but don't miss Phuket, I saw US Navy spending their vacation and having fun.
Some food items in Thailand are spicy but not everything. You can also ask that your food be less spicy. If you do not know what to eat in Thailand you can always eat fried rice!
Visit local Thai restaurants in your country. Look the menu choices. Sample some of the food. But it will taste better in Thailand! No problem getting Western style foods in Thailand. There are even many McDonalds, KFC's, Burger Kings, etc. in Thailand.
Don't skip Bangkok. Even Bangkok has nice warm weather all year long. See if you can fit in a visit to Chiang Mai to see something other than just beaches. Start in Bangkok for a few days and end up in Bangkok again for a night or two. In between up to you. For Bangkok choose a hotel on or near the Skytrain route. That way you can use the overhead rail service to get around the city. Sukhumvit Road, lower number end. (Nana - Asok Skytrain stops - is popular.) If you arrive during the day hours, before midnight, there is even rail service from the airport to the city - only 45 baht to Pratunam area!
If you are coming from a long distance - like Europe or US/Canada - stay at least 2 weeks to get the most from an expensive plane ticket. A few more days in Thailand does not cost that much more. Plan a budget out and see how much you can allot to hotel rooms and then ask for hotels in that price range. Closest beach area to Bangkok is Pattaya. Beach at Pattaya is no good for swimming but okay for sunbathing, shopping, nightlife and restaurants but the hotels and transportation is cheaper than Phuket and Bangkok! Phuket and nearby areas have the better beaches but also it is the most expensive area to visit in Thailand! Even Bangkok has cheaper transportation and cheaper hotels!
Google up Thai food and you will get many photos and descriptions. Pick up a couple travel guides from your local library and see what you like in Thailand and plan your trip around that.
In visiting Thailand's temples, I suggest that you first consult the customs of the Thais. There are do's and don't's to be followed. This is a great help in your preparation and packing for the trip as appropriate clothing is required when visiting certain areas of or the whole temple itself.
Bangkok alone is home of many Buddhist temples so it's a good place to start. Phuket, south of Bangkok, boasts of its sea and beaches so you may also include it on your itinerary.

Hi Richard. Thailand is a marvelous place to visit and I personally find the food to be exquisite, even if a bit adventurous at times. Eating out is a national past time in Bangkok and street food plays a huge part in this culture. If you want to try something you will never forget and be able to tell your friends about for years to come you might try sampling bugs on Bangkok's Soi Cowboy Yep bugs...
