Traveling South East Asia - advice

Hey peeps,

Are the organised tours of SE Asia good? Is it better to fly out along and go from there?

Sure some are great and others not so great. It all depends on the individual - what is good for me is not nec good for you

How much money would I need for 2-3 months traveling?

SE Asia is not all one price (Hong Kong/Singapore are expensive, while Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia are quite reasonable. I would bet $100. a day in the expensive places vs $40. a day in the cheapest ones.

Im looking at leaving Feb/March, what would the weather be like in this region?
Do I need any form of VISA?

An excellent time to go, and again it depends on where you go, and your passport

How easy is it to meet people? Easy to get around knowing only English? (Probably common sense answers but still asking).

Very easy - English is the international language of travel

If your looking for hardcore backpacking advice > I would say $10 - $15 a day if your planning on using cheap hostels & camp sites > Food is super cheap and can cost less than $2 for the whole day < $40 would be about right if your planning on visiting known tourist attractions as they can charge european prices (for example $25 to visit the Taj Mahal). If your using hotels & taxi's etc > The skys the limit <

Everyone seems to understand English which is good though <

Hey Luca,
Since I'm in Indonesia, perhaps you'd be interested to stop by. Here's what I can answer briefly.

Firstly, i've looked into tour operators who do the organised thing, but that just seems lame, however if that becomes cost effective and safer, it may be the realistic option. Are the organised tours of SE Asia good? Is it better to fly out along and go from there?
For several main cities in Indonesia, you don't need a tour operator. Some sights can be arranged by yourself. Specially in Java island. If you don't like to fly in the capital city, Jakarta, skip it and search for flights to land in Surabaya or Denpasar instead.

For this, you need to break down details. For meals, 3 USD is enough if you can eat our Indonesian local food as soon as you get in touch with them , if not then you have to enter some Western cafe and restaurants which will make the budget doubled even tripled.
For accommodations, depending on areas you will be, should start from around 6 USD/person/night.
Trains, flights, buses are varied according to normal/peak fares as well as destinations.

It might be still raining in some parts of Indonesia by Feb and March.
A visa on arrival is available for many countries at our international airports for about 30 USD or less.

Meeting any people are easy here, as we're quite populated. In some touristic areas such as Bali island, it's easy to communicate in English. Still, English is not widely spoken here so many times you need to try understanding our national language and use a body language to explain what you need to know.

Anyone on here been to that part of the world, feedback? What was amazing, what to avoid?
Well, Indonesian has so many amazing places but you'd want feedback from other travelers who had been to my country for objective answer.

Happy to help.
Cheers.

be adventurous and "rough" it out! The whole SEA is well connected, by flying or by car or bus! You can start from Singapore and travel upwards to Malaysia. You can rent a car and drive in (if you have a valid license) or you can take a bus (greenland/ konsortium, etc) or fly (air asia, jet star) Upwards somemore, you have Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia and Laos.

Singapore food is not all that ex! If you mix with the locals at the hawker centres, food is about SGD$3 for almost anything. If youre looking for a feast @ the hawker then of course, a meal can cost SGD$20 depending what you buy

then there's top class restaurants like Jaan, whose perched on the 70th story at Swissotel...

Generally the whole SEA only have two types of weather. Its either raining or its scorching. and you should have both during march.

and the visa depends on the passport you're holding

Yes, in major cities (Eg: Singapore, KL, tourist places in thailand). otherwise you might have to speak slower...

SEA is amazing. You have so much to explore. Check out online travel guides and plan where you want to go. Then route them up.

SEA generally is safe, but still youve gotta be careful still. just not into overdrive.

you can actually book everything yourself through the net (for accommodations and flights) tourist attractions/day trips can be purchased on the spot in SEA.

Have fun! :D

Hi Luca,

SEA is a nice place to visit. As I'm now working in Vietnam, I may help you out here if you pay a visit to this amazing country.

If possible visit Vietnam in Feb, this is the time when the new lunar year just started, lots of festivals will be hold and you will have the chance to see a lot.

You will need a visa for Vietnam, but do need to book everything in advance, I would recommend to just buy the tickets and plan everything when you arrived. There are lots of things to see and do, if any help needed, just mail me.

Wish you a nice trip

Thanks a lot guys for all your comments.

I've looked into a few things and think im gonna begin with something like this http://www.thaintro.com/

Im gonna head out to Thailand around Feb/March on my own and look to have a week or so in a group to get settled and then branch out on my own.

If anyone else is looking at the same period then please get in touch. Party time
