Italian Visa Help

I am hoping someone on here can give me some advice or at least point me in the right direction. I am trying to move to Italy (I'm an American) and work for my father's company as my employment. I have done some research and I think my best bet is to apply for the elective residence visa because I won't be needing to apply for a job while I am overseas. My question is this: will they allow me to apply for this type of visa because I won't have all the funds in my account at once ? Also will this allow me to obtain a sojourners permit after I arrive? Or maybe there is some other type of visa alternative that would be better suited towards my needs? I have read a few articles saying that a big part of the red tape for applying for a visa is their worry about you taking jobs from locals which I will not be doing. Like I said any help would be very much appreciated seeing how all this is very confusing and it is my first time tackling such an en devour.

I don't know how much this can help, but I am an italian citizen (I was not born in Italy, my mother was) and it's the consulate where you should ask all these questions. I assume you are not an EU citizen, are you? As I cannot help you much, I just want to make sure that you email/call/visit them. They should help you out. Have you tried the embassy? Even though usually it's the consulate where they manage this sort of business, you could at least try.
I hope something of all that timley wibley helped!

Yes I really didn't want to call the consulate because I'm stubborn But I did and he was very helpful in explaining the process and answering my questions. I guess with applying for a visa its always a tricky situation so my fingers are crossed it will all work out.

Yes, sometimes the consulate employees can be a bit impatient and rude, so I understand completely why you didn't want to call. I'm glad the call was worth it! Good luck!
