Hi everyone!!!
For insurance and flights, try the Daily Mail, Saturday or Sunday, travel section. The travel companies have good advice too.
There are a number of companies like Kayak who do cheapish flights. Changing days can knock down the price and allowing a stop in some airport for a few hours on the way can cut the price too.
It is a LONG flight so maybe stop off for a few days on the way out and back, like Bangkok?
I usually take a holdall but it depends on how much travelling you are doing. A backpack may be easier to carry around.
Cheap accommodation: hostelbookers, hostelworld, travellerspoint, etc.
If you plan on being in Sydney for Xmas and the New Year, book accommodation ASAP as the rooms fill up very quickly, and prices sky rocket.
Check out a Lonely Planet guide to Australia in W H Smiths or book shops. It's packed full of information and well worth the price.
