Can anyone advise on what would be involved if a non-south american like myself, bought a car registered in the US - from US travelers,? I have decided this might be a simpler option for me rather than buying locally, and also gives me the flexibility to drive back to the states.
Insurance is a problem in that generally no company is going to ensure a car to drive in another country, let alone a number of countries.
Before you can insure a car, you will need a valid test certificate of that country. In some cases, registration in that country (even here in Spain where I am at present).
In the last week on a British travel show, the travellers had bought a car to travel around a country only to have a major fault occur on it, with an expensive time getting it to a garage and getting it fixed, while they put themselves up in local accommodation.
There is also the problem that you will be driving through a number of potentially dangerous countries from Peru to the US.
thanks for the heads up, I will look further into it.
