hello! i will be participating in a study abroad program at the lorenzo di medici school in florence and also southern italy this summer. from monday thru thursdays i will have classes but i will have friday thru sunday free every week over the 4 week program. i'd like to use these weekends to travel around italy with the condition that i return to my host family at 230am every night. would it be reasonable to take the train to different places each day, returning to florence each night? how long are bus/ train rides to different regions?
On the train its only 3 hours to Rome, 2 hours to Venice and about 40 minutes to Pisa but also depends what train you take some stop at all stations and some go direct.. Florence is a lovely city i met other students doing the study abroad program when i was there last year and they loved it.
Cinqueterre is not too far, you can get there via train la spezia. You might need to connect in Pisa. It's gorgeous. If you like hiking you can walk to the 5 towns. I studied in florence too and loved cinqueterre. Possible day trip but worth more time.
Rome is a great place to visit, it's huge, so i'm recommending some smaller places that are beautiful. Siena is an hour away and a good walking city. Also San Gimignano its is a must and you can get there and back in a day. Lucca is nice.
Amalfi coast is nice, but more relaxing and farther away. There isn't a lot of nightlife on the Amalfi Coast or Cinqueterre, but they are beautiful places to explore if you like to hike or take pictures, great food.
You might need to spend the night in these places though. You can go to Sienna for a day trip. There are frequent buses from Florence and I think it's about an hour. San Gimignano or Lucca you can do in a day. Perugia you could do in a day.
If you are really into nightlife, florence has a lot and it's geared towards college student age because there are so many there who are studying abroad.
Florence is a great place for seeing some beautiful destinations in Italy. Enjoy!

It's possible for you to go to all the places you mentioned. Travelling by a train to Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa is a great choice. Enjoy your stay!
