My boyfriend and I are looking to get from anywhere along the West Coast USA to anywhere in SE ASIA via boat this summer. We want to leave as soon as May 2012 and have no definite travel plans after that, except that we really want to explore Indonesia and Thailand for sure and hopefully, many other wonderful places in between!
First of all, I think you need to get just a little more realistic. Even if you could find a yacht going from California to SE Asia, chances are not too good that they would want to hire 2 as crew - maybe 1? Generally, yachts prefer to head to southern waters in the S. Pacific since N. Pacific waters are cold and prone to more storms. You might do better out of Honolulu than California.
As to airfare, look to the largest air markets (Los Angeles to Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong or Seoul). The Chinese airlines are generally the cheapest: China Southern, Air China, China Airlines (Taiwan) or China Eastern. Fares fluctuate by date, so use a search like Kayak or to find the cheaper days. Often the ethnic travel agents in neighborhoods with large Asian populations have lower fares - look in Chinatown in SF or LA, Korea Town in LA or a Vietnamese neighborhood in San Jose or Westminster (Orange County).
