I'm heading to south east asia in july till september/october time (money permitting) and wondered what the cheapest way to travel would be. I'm not booking tickets, im hoping to catch a stand by from heathrow to Bangkok. But is that the cheapest option? i.e. would it be cheaper to fly to Cambodia, or would it be cheaper to fly to thailand and get a bus over to Cambodia? (I have to be in Cambodia in august but wanted to catch the full moon party in Thailand first..)
Would be great to hear from anyone who can help or anyone that's heading out at the same time!
Pip.
Bangkok is usually cheaper to fly in to, as long haul direct flights to Cambodia are rare, and usually go through Bangkok anyway.
It's very easy and cheap to get a bus from Bangkok to Cambodia.
I do think you'll be left at the airport (in London) if you try to stand by - times have changed, and so have airline policies.
The cheapest ticket I could find would be on July 30th (Turkish Airlines) LGW via IST into BKK - $673. one way (online purchase)

Hey Payl,
I will be in Thailand at this time too. Will be my 4th time Will also be at the moon party in July which you said you shall be at.
If I were you i'd just buy a ticket from STA travel or somewhere similar. You can get an indirect flight for £350-£400
when is the best time to go to thailand, I want to leave in about 2 months time but i've heard the weather isnt great. If this is right where can i go in july time? I want to travel all of asia, aus/nz and brazil/peru
Thanks
Hey, me and 2 other girls got a flight from London gatwick to Bangkok for £440! We booked it through STA travel and it was from the end of June to mid august...return obviously!
See you guys at the July FMP...soo excited
Hey,
Im going to try fly from Bristol but it might have to be Gatwick which will be annoying, Im thinking about leaving roughly the same time, do you know what the weather will be like? want to see as much as possible so hoping it will be nice.
Hope you have a good time, might even see you there
Well on most websites and stuff it says the month to avoid is April and I've known a few people who went last summer and they never mentioned the weather being bad! I know it's monsoon season but on websites they've said it's quite unpredictable and just the odd shower..so we might be thankful of the odd rain shower because of the really hot weather!
Me and 2 other girls are coming from Ireland so we hada go book other flights to get us to gatwick which is annoying too! Are you travelling alone? If you're planning doing loads definitely check out STA travel/trailfinders as they do great deals on RTW tickets!
That sounds reassuring then, I think if all goes well I will leave either July/Aug. Yeah im heading out alone and for the first time so its quite scary but i'm really looking forward to it.
Im going to book an appointment with STA within the next month or so just so I can go through everything like Visas/Flights/Acommadationetc, I really have no idea what to do about any of this yet lol
Are you going anywhere else other than Thailand, and did you just boko a return flight or an RTW?
I've talked to loadsa people and apparantly lots go alone and you'll make tons more friends They can't discuss visas really with you, only the embassys can tell you the exact rules!
My sister did RTW in september..like bangkok, thailand, cambodia, loas, veitnam then onto NZ and then a few different cities in Aus and then over to Newyork to visit family. But they didn't really book accomodation far in advance...like if you're going to a new city maybe book ur first 2 nites in a hostel then from then on just hear recommendations and go with the flow!
Nope we're only going around SE Asia for 6 weeks, don't have the time or money to do much more!
