Search around the internet like the rest of us. Different days can be cheaper and adding a stop or two for a few hours in some airport on the way can help with long haul. A different airport in the same country might be cheaper as well as travelling from a different airport in the UK. Also don't travel when the kids are on holiday (ie: Travel off season).

I find that the best way to find cheap flights is just to study the air travel industry, know which airlines are generally better and cheaper than others, know about LCC's, and keep up with current prices (which just happen to be way up at the moment). Russian, Indian and Chinese airlines are generally cheaper, but even on very good full fare lines, they do occasionally need to fill those seats (the few empty ones now available). That is the problem, really - capacity has been slashed in recent months, and that means demand is way up.
Itravel2000 has always had the cheapest I found.
I like using skyscanner.net (or .com, can't remember) to compare fares... but then I have to admit I usually book direct with airline.
There was an in the NY times recently where he compared offline agents to online booking sites. He was mainly looking at agents who specialise in certain destinations. For example, an agent servicing the local Turkish population in NY. He compared online prices to the prices these agents could give him and found that in ALL situations, the offline agent was cheapest.
This is all to say - don't ignore the high-street agent if you are really looking for a deal! Websites just do not have access to a lot of the really heavily discounted fares.
