You need to decide what you want to see and do, and so get some idea of how much time in each place.
Consider buying a Lonely Planet guide to America. It's packed with good information.
Rhode Island? Why? I went there a few decades ago to visit someone and there was little to see. What's in New Jersey for a tourist?
I was in Texas one July and the temperature was 99.F and humid. Perhaps do the southern states before it gets too hot?
How are you going to travel about? Flights can be expensive and buses are endlessly boring. I drove all around America which was OK for me on my own but could be boring for 3 passengers. You can fly into an airport, pick up a car and visit nearby places. America is very car orientated and some places you cannot get by without one.
June to August is when people take their holidays in America and accommodation and flights fill up. Don't leave it too late to book once you know what you are doing.
You could try out the Fodors forum. Lots of Americans there who can help with personal knowledge.
