Trip to NYC

Hello there, fellow travelers!

I used the website to rent a shared apartment in NYC (Brooklyn) late last year - saved a fortune (paid only $79. a night to share a first class full apartment).

Hitchhiking will get you nowhere fast in the States - everyone will just pass you up, or possibly do you some harm?

I really would not advise hitchhiking!

Have you not thought about waiting until last minute and getting a cheap deal?
Like www.lastminute.com or something along those lines?

Daawgon, thanks - really great link, found some hostels for as cheap as $9 per night.

charlendonn, I know it's risky, but people still do it - don't they? I've never been to US, so I'm not sure, maybe it's a lot more dangerous than it is elsewhere. But my heart requires something interesting and adventurous. Any advice on any other extremely interesting and unpredictable way of traveling apart from hitchhiking?

And no, I didn't thought about lastminute. It's a good idea, however, what if there won't be anything at the last minute? Then I'll end up having to book for a much more expensive price.

In most areas in the US hitchhiking is a thing of the past. You might find it in small town USA where locals pick up locals -- but picking up someone unknown is too dangerous. Truckers used to pick up hitchhikers but now company policies and insurance liabilities make it rare. And in some areas, hitchhiking will land you in jail. Better to check out the bus schedules.

As for camping along roads and in the woods -- YIKES!!! Is it done? Yes -- but again you might find yourself in jail or even worse. If you cannot afford to stay in even the cheapest hotels/motels maybe you should rethink your adventure. Either shorten your trip or wait until you can budget enough money to provide housing. If you said you wanted to hike in the Adirondacks or the Catskills -- I'd say -- sure no problem -- but I suspect you do not want to commune with nature.
