My wife and I will be in Ireland for 7 nights this summer and will be staying near Dublin and have rented a car for the week. We will have 8 full days. If we use Dublin as our base, what "can't miss sights" are within reach on day trips? Thank you!
If you use Dublin as your base and you get used to driving in Ireland - you can see the whole country from Dublin.
Thanks dub1. In your opinion, what are the top 5 things to see outside of Dublin?
Dublin is the perfect place to base yourself!! There is plenty of main routes heading north south and west!! Galway is a must for two nights great atmosphere and lovely people!m
If you are staying in Dublin, there are lots of places outside Dublin within easy reach for day trips. I don't know if you're interested more in the outdoors or in culture type things but here are a few suggestions:
The Wicklow area on the N11 road is very accessible. Glendalough is a must, especially if the weather is nice. The Powerscourt gardens and waterfall are near there too. There are some great walks in the Wicklow mountains, and great mountain biking trails at Ballinastoe, depending on how active you want to be... Greystones is a nice little village with beaches. There are other beaches further south on the N11 - Brittas Bay is the most well known.
For culture, Newgrange and the old tombs in the surrounding area are about an hour (or less) drive north of Dublin.
Kilkenny is a castle-based city about 1.5 hours drive from Dublin. Belfast is also less than 2 hours drive from Dublin.
The Blessington lakes are just outside Dublin and are beautiful.
If you want to see the west of the country I would recommend staying at least one or two nights near the places you want to see.
Enjoy!

Thank you all for your advice. We're planning on a night or two in the West. Two months to go until our adventure. We live in an American Midwestern state that is larger than Ireland but has only a fraction of the things to do. Can't wait.
