We are living in Siberia and plan to leave in November for France. Enroute we will spend a few days in St Petersburg and want to visit some nearby cities of interest e.g. Kiev, Minsk, maybe Volgograd. However it will be very cold and we are travelling with a 1yr old baby. Any advice on places to visit that are within a few hours flight of Moscow or St Petersburg? We are interested in the outdoors (which will be limited at that time of year), WWII history, culture and food.

If you are going to visit Kiev during your travel check out -snip- that might be interesting for you. I've been to Kiev this summer to see EURO 2012 tournament and love this city.
