City break - Christmas markets

I'm thinking of going away to a European city for 2-3 days in early December and like the idea of visiting some Christmas markets. Can anyone recommend somewhere which is worth visiting and also has decent markets at that time of year? I've thought of Salzburg and Hamburg so far.

How about Cologne with a choice of SIX markets to choose from:

.

Thanks Cyberia. I've already been twice to Cologne and much as it's lovely I'd probably want to go somewhere new.

Prague is my absolute favourite at Christmas time, it's so quaint and pretty with all the decorations and medieval town centre. The Christmas markets are big too with lots of local handcrafts so you can get a lot of nice gifts there.

I usually use this site for city breaks because they always give me ideas for new places to visit: http://www.travelizer.co.uk/themes/seasonal/

jet2holidays also has a Christmas market page http://www.jet2holidays.com/offers/christmas_markets.aspx

I'd also recommend Strasbourg, again very pretty, and some fantastic restaurants:

Hi,

I really enjoyed the Christmas market at Hamburg, though the best one I've visited so far is Stuttgart and from there you can also easily visit Ludwigsburg. I've heard that while the Salzburg market is lovely it's also super expensive, but as I've not been to that one yet myself, I can't compare the prices with others.

The website given above for the Cologne market, is also a good site for info on several other German markets. I use it quite a lot when planning my Christmas market trips.

Hope you find what you're looking for

Thanks everyone.
